[ARCHIVED] New Aeration System

Aerators on floating lateral

City of Rawlins staff are bubbling with excitement (pun intentional). We have our new fine bubble aeration system installed and are thankful to those who helped complete this project on schedule and under budget.

On May 5, 2020 City Council approved the proposal from Environmental Dynamics Incorporated (EDI) for the Replacement of the Wastewater Lagoon Aeration System. The pervious aeration system at the waste water treatment plant was old and inadequate. The circulating pumps were no longer operable and the air emulsion tubes were broken beyond repair.

In a 2012 report completed by Sunrise Engineering they had identified four options for repair with an estimated cost of $730,000. Due to efforts of our engineer, our treatment plant employees, and EDI we were able to complete the installation of a fine bubble system under budget. We spent just under $350,000 on all three aeration ponds and now have system that works efficiently.

The new system will cut power usage in half and reduces the sludge in the lagoons by 60%, which equates to approximately $1M in savings compared to paying for sludge removal. This new system also aids in improving treatment so that the City can easily meet Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) regulations.
