[ARCHIVED] RPD Responds to Shooting

Dakota Brown - wanted

On April 8, 2022, the Rawlins Police Department investigated an early-morning non-fatal shooting that occurred in the 1100 block of Mountain View Blvd. Investigation revealed a confrontation occurred in which the victim was shot. 
After the victim was shot, two suspects and three witnesses fled the scene. The victim self-transported to the Memorial Hospital of Carbon County Emergency Room. The armed suspects are Zach Lawson and Dakota Brown, both of Rawlins. Zach Lawson was apprehended in Rawlins and charged with aggravated assault. Multiple firearms have been seized, but the shotgun believed to be involved has not been recovered.  
Detectives have also identified three witnesses who were on-scene: Tura Wenger, Kelsey Hennek, and Brittany Kern, all of Rawlins. The RPD is requesting to speak with these individuals or for public assistance with any information on the witnesses’ whereabouts. 
RPD detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Dakota Brown for attempted first-degree murder. He remains outstanding and is believed to be in the Rawlins area. He is 5’ 11” and 150 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo of brass knuckles on his right hand, what appears to be a Chinese symbol of some kind in blue and outlined in black on his left hand, and multiple other small tattoos on both arms, his chest, and back. The RPD requests the public’s assistance with any information on his whereabouts.

In an abundance of caution Carbon County School District #1, in cooperation with the RPD, have placed all schools on lockout at this time. Our investigation still indicates the shooting which took place early this morning was not random and there is no immediate danger to the public. In the early morning hours of April 8, 2022, Rawlins Police Department officers responded to Memorial Hospital of Carbon County for a report of an adult male in the ER suffering from trauma to his upper body.  The investigation determined that the victim was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound that was sustained at a residence in the 1100 block of Mountain View Boulevard. The victim was transferred to another medical facility in stable condition.  Preliminary investigation indicates that the event was not random and there is no immediate danger to the public.
