The City of Rawlins would like to update our community on the status of our first two “6th Penny Projects”, as funded by the 2019 Specific Purpose Tax – Edinburgh and Walnut Streets.
The Walnut Street Rebuild, including underground utilities, curb and gutter, and a full street rebuild from 3rd to 7th Streets, was designed from late 2020-early 2021. It was then bid out and awarded to Lewis & Lewis by City Council. All documentation has now been completed and a pre-construction meeting is scheduled for next week. It is anticipated that the Walnut Street Rebuild will be completed this season.
The Edinburgh Street Rebuild extends from Dunphail Street to Murray Street and includes underground utilities, the addition of new storm sewer infrastructure, some curb and gutter and a full street rebuild. As the engineering was completed this winter, the scope of the project was determined to be larger than originally expected and staff now estimates this project will take two construction seasons.
This rebuild is also a very pipe heavy project, as it includes both underground utilities and new storm sewer infrastructure. Pipe pricing is currently very uncertain due to supply chain issues. This makes it near impossible for contractors to bid on pipe heavy projects throughout Wyoming. Due to this national supply issue, staff has recommended that the project be bid this winter for completion in 2022 and 2023. However, staff is now getting quotes for temporary repairs to Edinburgh to improve drivability through next summer and hopes to have an update by next week.
